Clutter is the number one culprit when it comes to keeping bathrooms tidy, with so many products that need to be stored. We have all seen the beautiful pictures in glossy home magazines and on pinterest, and most of us have probably thought that the looks shown are totally unattainable for the average person. Quite frankly, unless you are going to ban anyone from living in your home (yourself included), and are going to hire an interior designer to style you home to within an inch of its life, your bathroom will not look like those perfectly staged ones in the pictures. Having said that, there are things you can do. So as previously mentioned, clutter is not helpful. Before you do anything else, you need to declutter.
- Throw out any expired products.
- Get rid of any makeup that you haven’t used for years.
- Streamline your skincare routine. Most of us are guilty of having way more products than we need or use, it is time to get ruthless.
- If you have things that you just can’t part with, or unopened products that you will eventually use, consider storing them elsewhere in a labelled container with a lid (maybe in your linen cupboard)
Once you have sorted through and decided what you are keeping, you need to find a place for everything. Put things that you use everyday in the top drawer, or at the front of your cupboard in an organiser tray. Store whatever you don’t use as often in the bottom drawer or on bottom shelf in the cupboard. If you don’t have quite enough built in storage, there are lots of storage products available in stores. A narrow and tall set of drawers can often be squeezed into a bathroom, and may be the answer to your storage problems. Don’t forget to make use of your walls, shelving is a great way to add extra storage and can also be visually appealing.
One of the biggest things you will notice when walking into a day spa or styled home, surfaces in the home are usually empty or
minimally decorated. Having bits and pieces everywhere does not give the room the serene feel you are going for, clutter is not only visually unappealing but can overstimulate your mind making it hard to relax. As I said before, your home is not a display home,
you live there and it needs to be functional as well as look good, but there are definitely things you can do to still achieve the day spa feel. If you do need to have things on benchtops, make sure they are contained, there are lots of stylish bathroom organisers available. If you are decorating with candles, plants or trinkets, just choose one corner of the bath or benchtop. Don’t spread things out everywhere, try and keep as much free space as possible.
When it comes to decorating and adding storage, select materials that compliment each other. The more styles, colours and patterns you introduce into a room, the more cluttered and chaotic it will look. Using more neutral colours for the walls and tiles will always look good, and you can add pops of colour through your choice of towels or by adding a few plants.
