Now that you have finally been given the keys to your new home, the fun can begin. Decorating your home is so exciting, but it isn’t as easy as just picking furniture and decor you like and putting it all in a room.
There are rules that interior designers follow to make sure they get the most out of every home design, and knowing what not to do will help you get it right the first time. Your living room is not only where you will spend most of your time at home, but it will also be seen by visitors. To get the look just right, try to avoid making the following mistakes:
Too Much Clutter
This is one of the biggest issues people have in their homes, and it really can ruin the whole feel of a room. Get rid of things you don’t need and find a spot for everything else, also try and hide all the everyday clutter in boxes or baskets.
No Natural Touches
There is no doubt that some greenery gives your home a fresh feel, and with the high quality of fake plants available these days, you certainly don’t have to be a green thumb. A bunch of fresh flowers will also give your home that styled look you see in magazines.
Power Cords and TV Cables Everywhere
Nothing takes away from the carefully styled look of a home, as much as visible cables and cords. It isn’t always easy, but there are some things you can do. Obviously when it comes to cables, if they can be hidden in the walls of your home that is the ideal solution. Cords are harder to hide, but there are cord boxes that can be bought that help, also try and use wireless technology wherever you can.
Too Many Cushions
Who would have thought this was even a thing? Cushions are one of the most popular decor items, and they can change the whole look of a room. Unfortunately, though, it is easy to go overboard. Too many cushions just makes the space feel too busy, try and keep to 2 cushions in each corner of a sofa, or 3 in one corner.
Wrong Size Rug
It is one of the most common mistakes people make when decorating a room, and the wrong size rug can really throw off the whole balance of a space. A rug that is too small will look awkward and insignificant, too big and the room can feel cluttered. Try to get a rug that sits approximately 30cm under your sofa and armchairs.
